What is special about designing a home for a family? Being a residential interior designer can be one of the most rewarding careers. Many people opt out of spending time and money having someone design their home. As a designer I have wondered why families do not take the time to invest their money into a home where they spend most of their time making memories with their family.
As an interior designer, our job is to interview the family. After talking with each family member it is important to understand what they envision in their own home and understand what their definition of home really is. Creating a space is about function and comfort for that specific family. As a designer it is important to remember that this varies depending on the family and their version of tranquility.
Our job is to design residential homes with elegance and sophistication. The goal is to create a space that is timeless so that the client will love their selections years after they have lived in their home. One way to create a timeless look is to use elements from nature. For example, marble is a material that has been used for thousands of years to create statues all over the world. This natural element can be brought into a home in various ways such as countertops, accent tile or simply with accessories. Another way to create a timeless effect is to mix old with new such as pairing a new upholstered bed with nightstands from a different time period. This makes the room look as if items were collected over the course of time and were effortless.
Residential design is special in that every project is different based on the clients’ expectations. Creating a home for a family to make memories is truly inspiring.
